Fillers (commonly known brands such as Juvederm, & Restylane) are all created to return volume to the skin. They are primarily made up of a clear gel called Hyaluronic Acid, which is a naturally occurring sugar found in your body. The Hyaluronic Acid binds with water in your skin to instantly restore lost volume, reduce lines and wrinkles, and also stimulate collagen. Fillers have the ability to help you look fresher and well rested, or to shape your facial features to create a more distinctive personal appearance.
As we age, we begin to see a reduction in the thickness and resilience of our skin, a sagging in the jaw line, and permanent circles or depressions in our tear trough. By injecting fillers we can lift, fill and soften deep depressions that are causing us to look older, tired or angry. Best of all, results are instant and will continue to improve over a few weeks. Generally fillers can last up to a year depending on where the injection is made. Each manufacturer has developed different types of filler suited to specific areas such as the tear trough, the cheek and chin, laugh lines, and wrinkles. An experienced injector can choose the right filler for the right facial area dependant on the level of lift needed.
Common Questions Regarding Fillers:
It feels like a quick pinch and then some mild pressure. To optimize patient comfort, a topical anaesthetic (numbing) cream is applied. Most fillers also have lidocaine in the product itself to maximize numbing in the treated area.
Mild to modest bruising is not uncommon, although a few precautions can help minimize the risk: Avoid using St. John’s Wort, high doses of Vitamin E supplh3ents, Ginger, Garlic, Green Tea, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, and Naproxen or other blood thinning agents for one week prior to procedure.
Eating pineapples strengthens blood vessels, so eating thh3 a week before treatment can be helpful. Arnica tablets, offered at most Natural food stores, are also beneficial to prevent bruising.
Mild and temporary injection site reactions include:
- Pain or tenderness
- Lumps and bumps
More serious but very rare side effects could include:
- Allergic reaction
Topical numbing with cream can take ½ hour, and another 30 minutes or so for the injections, signing consent forms and taking photos for comparison. Plan on being in the office for a minimum of 1 hour.
Fillers start at $300, but most filler appointments range from $500-$1000 to start. Please ask your injection nurse to discuss a Soft Lift package that combines BOTOX® Cosmetic and Filler and can save you $500+ in sessions requiring numerous syringes. It is common to need less filler in subsequent appointments.
Fillers are singularly satisfying as the results last a very long time and are instantaneous. Patients leave seeing notable improvh3ents, but still feel like they look like thh3selves.

Volbella with Lidocaine
Full lips with a defined border are a feature of youthful attractiveness. As we age, natural substances such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, that give skin structure and volume, gradually decrease. This results in lips and the surrounding area being vulnerable to volume loss. Stronger definition of the lip border or the subtle addition of volume can create younger-looking lips. Whether your lips are naturally thin or full, JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® lip injections can be used to enhance lip shape or restore lost fullness.
JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® is a new facial filler specifically designed for gently restoring natural-looking lip volume and defining lip contours. JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® is the only facial filler clinically proven to last up to 12 months in the lips with a single treatment.1†**
†Single treatment=meaning one lip injection and optional top-up at 14 days, for up to 12 months.
**As of June 2013.
Juvéderm® VOLBELLA with Lidocaine is a new hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler indicated for the enhancement and pouting of the lips to correct volume loss.i It has been uniquely designed for a natural look, with less swelling compared to other lip fillers.
Juvéderm® VOLBELLA with Lidocaine is the latest addition to the JUVÉDERM® family of products that was developed using the unique VYCROSSTM technology, delivering results that are natural in appearanceii and long-lasting. With the addition of the mild local anesthetic, lidocaine (0.3%), patients can enjoy a gentler, more comfortable treatment experience, compared to products that do not include this ingredient.
This new dermal filler is designed to restore and enhance natural-looking lips. Juvéderm® VOLBELLA with Lidocaine is the only HA dermal filler clinically proven to last up to 12 months* with a single treatment, with less swelling compared to other lip fillers, enabling patients to return to their daily routine more quickly.
Juvéderm® VOLBELLA with Lidocaine is administered by injection directly into the lips to temporarily enhance or restore volume loss. The key ingredient in the JUVÉDERM® family of products, HA, is derived from a naturally-occurring sugar which helps to maintain volume and elasticity in the skin. It is broken down by the body in one or two days, and so is constantly replaced. However, as we age, this replacement mechanism diminishes, so the moisturizing and plumping effects of HA decreases. For this reason, HA is used in certain aesthetic treatments to help restore lost hydration and improve the skin’s volume and texture.
Juvéderm® VOLBELLA with Lidocaine was developed using the proprietary VYCROSS technology. It is formulated with an innovative combination of low and high molecular weight which improves the cross- linking efficiency of HA chains. This more effective cross-linking allows for a lower concentration of HA to be used, which is designed to result in less swelling. The VYCROSS technology delivers an ultra- smooth gel which results in a natural look and feel, as well as improved duration.
As with any medical procedure, there is always a risk of unwanted side effects with HA dermal filler treatments. Most side effects are normally short-lived and often relate to the injection procedure. Following injection, there may be redness, slight swelling, or bruising around the injection area.
