Metvix Photodynamic Therapy

Metvix™ photo dynamic therapy is an effective therapeutic approach for the treatment of primary superficial basal cell carcinoma (sBCC) and Actinic Keratosis (AK).

AK’s are the most common pre-cancerous skin lesion. Left untreated, they can sometimes develop into Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), which is an aggressive type of cancer that invades deeper layers of skin and potentially to other organs.

Basal Cell Carcinoma is a common type of skin cancer. Left untreated it can grow and invade surrounding tissue.

Actilite Activation

Two applications and activations are equivalent to one round of treatment.

Metvix™ is $385 per tube. This is our cost. You may require more than one tube if a large area is affected, so ask your technician. Payment is made the day of treatment. Most insurance companies will reimburse you for all, or most of the tube(s) of Metvix.

Activation is $250 for one round of in office treatment. This includes the two visits to the office at which time you may have a shave biopsy done, or at the least, the affected area will be gently “roughed up” with microdermabrasion or curettage to allow maximum penetration of the Metvix cream.

The area will be covered and you will wait 3 hrs for the cream to absorb. You may stay at the office, or leave at your discretion. It is important to avoid exposure to sun and ultraviolet light during the incubation. After 3 hours, the area is cleansed and a red light (Aktilite) is focused on it to activate the Metvix at 9 minutes per area. If you have multiple areas, you will be here 9 minutes per area. You may have medication for pain management as this treatment option can result in mild to severe discomfort. After activation, the area is covered and you MUST avoid exposure to sun or ultraviolet light for 48 hours. This activation fee is usually NOT covered by your insurance.

Sunlight Activation

Metvix™ is $385 per tube. This is our cost. You may require more than one tube if a large area is affected, so ask your technician. Payment is made the day of treatment. Most insurance companies will reimburse you for all, or most of the tube(s) of Metvix.

Application is $150 for one round of treatment at which time you may have a shave biopsy done, or at the least, the affected area will be gently “roughed up” with microdermabrasion or curettage to allow maximum penetration of the Metvix cream. The area will be covered and you will wait 30 minutes for the cream to absorb. You may stay at the office, or leave at your discretion. It is important to expose your skin to sunlight for 2.5 hours immediately after. It is not important for it to be a “sunny” day, but it should not be raining. You should not sit in the shade. This slow activation in the sun, minimizes or eliminates pain and discomfort. After 2.5 hours, the area is cleansed with regular soap and water. Aktilite can also be used after sun activation although this is strictly for patient comfort, and is not considered necessary. After activation, the area is covered and you MUST avoid exposure to sun or ultraviolet light for 48 hours. This activation fee is usually NOT covered by your insurance.

Post Treatment

Metvix attaches itself to abnormal cells-including areas that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Because of this, post treatment response can vary from mild to exuberant skin reactions. That is,some people may experience mild peeling and crusting, while others may experience diffuse redness, discomfort and thick scaling and crusting of the skin. All of these responses are considered normal. For your own comfort, you are welcome to use acetaminophen or ibuprofen, cold packs and keep the skin moist with plain Vaseline. If you are experiencing excessive pain, discomfort or crusting, please feel free to call our office or simply drop in for an assessment.

A follow up appointment after treatment is done with Dr. Giroux 3 months after to ensure recovery and clearance of the lesions.
