Fillers (commonly known brands such as Juvederm, & Restylane) are all created to return volume to the skin. They are primarily made up of a clear gel called Hyaluronic Acid, which is a naturally occurring sugar found in your body. The Hyaluronic Acid binds with water in your skin to instantly restore lost volume, reduce lines and wrinkles, and also stimulate collagen. Fillers have the ability to help you look fresher and well rested, or to shape your facial features to create a more distinctive personal appearance.
As we age, we begin to see a reduction in the thickness and resilience of our skin, a sagging in the jaw line, and permanent circles or depressions in our tear trough. By injecting fillers we can lift, fill and soften deep depressions that are causing us to look older, tired or angry. Best of all, results are instant and will continue to improve over a few weeks. Generally fillers can last up to a year depending on where the injection is made. Each manufacturer has developed different types of filler suited to specific areas such as the tear trough, the cheek and chin, laugh lines, and wrinkles. An experienced injector can choose the right filler for the right facial area dependant on the level of lift needed.
Common Questions Regarding Fillers:
It feels like a quick pinch and then some mild pressure. To optimize patient comfort, a topical anaesthetic (numbing) cream is applied. Most fillers also have lidocaine in the product itself to maximize numbing in the treated area.
Mild to modest bruising is not uncommon, although a few precautions can help minimize the risk: Avoid using St. John’s Wort, high doses of Vitamin E supplh3ents, Ginger, Garlic, Green Tea, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, and Naproxen or other blood thinning agents for one week prior to procedure.
Eating pineapples strengthens blood vessels, so eating thh3 a week before treatment can be helpful. Arnica tablets, offered at most Natural food stores, are also beneficial to prevent bruising.
Mild and temporary injection site reactions include:
- Pain or tenderness
- Lumps and bumps
More serious but very rare side effects could include:
- Allergic reaction
Topical numbing with cream can take ½ hour, and another 30 minutes or so for the injections, signing consent forms and taking photos for comparison. Plan on being in the office for a minimum of 1 hour.
Fillers start at $300, but most filler appointments range from $500-$1000 to start. Please ask your injection nurse to discuss a Soft Lift package that combines BOTOX® Cosmetic and Filler and can save you $500+ in sessions requiring numerous syringes. It is common to need less filler in subsequent appointments.
Fillers are singularly satisfying as the results last a very long time and are instantaneous. Patients leave seeing notable improvh3ents, but still feel like they look like thh3selves.
